Annotated check-list of the birds of the Republic of Macedonia

Abstract

All published or accessibly reported data on bird species so far recorded in the Republic of Macedonia are overviewed. In total, for 318 species the information is considered to be reliable, and for further 16, concern on the identification and/or reporting is expressed. Accepted species belong to 189 genera, 63 families and 18 orders. For as many as 53 accepted species, there are not more than ten records in the country, and for them detailed information is presented. Where appropriate, the last cases of breeding, the single cases of breeding or the most recent observations, are reported. Within the bird fauna of the Republic of Macedonia, 108 species are considered monotypic. For all other documented subspecies are listed. The presence of more than one subspecies has been reported in 13 species.
